Presentation:

Trauma and War Trauma
Paola Mieli, PH.D.

Trauma is at the origin of life and of human sexuality. It is at the center of the very structure of the human being, as subject of language. Affects, formations of the unconscious, symptoms are responses to it. But what is the consequence of the summation of traumatic experiences? What is the consequence of trauma unleashed by radical violence, a violence geared toward annihilating the subject? How can we approach these traumas clinically?

Afternoon Session: 2:00 PM — 4:00 PM

Moderator:

Jane Genende, LCSW-R

Discussant:

Evan Malater, LCSW-R

Presentation:

"No place for a woman" - On the relation between the hatred of sexual difference and the ideology of terror
Mark Stafford, LP

The purpose of terrorism is not only to kill and maim but to try make life within a particular space impossible. Acts of terror and the responses to them are frequently framed in ideological (religious and political) terms. Campaigns of terror have, particularly since the conflict in Bosnia (1992-95), specifically targeted women. Without ignoring the ideological dimension we will explore instead the links between the use of terror and the hatred for the idea of "a women", the real of femininity and sexual difference.
